Magnesium stearate is a naturally occurring substance, often of animal origin. An alternative is vegetable stearate. It is most often made from guinea oil, which contains magnesium salts of fatty acids.
Magnesium stearate contains stearic fatty acid and magnesium ion.
Leading supplement and drug manufacturers, including those controlled by the US Medicines Regulatory Agencies, use pharmacologically pure stearate. The manufacturing process is strictly controlled and subject to certain standards.
